At both our hospitals we have Honeycomb memorials and Remembrance Rose Gardens (the one at HRI is pictured) to honour the memory of our patients who have given the gift of life.
Being able to provide the correct and sensitive support to families at such difficult times is very important to us and this support by all involved was recently praised by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).
They gave us two "exceptional" ratings for how we support any patient who wishes to be a donor and, of course, their families.
Paul Knight, our clinical lead for Organ Donation, said: "We find that our families take great comfort from organ donation, and see it as the only positive aspect of losing a loved one and, as clinicians, we feel very privileged to meet and support these amazing families who think of others at such a difficult time."
Jayne Greenhalgh, our Specialist Nurse, is present for all procedures, supporting the discussions with families of eligible donors which is considered the gold standard of care in such difficult and emotional times.
One of our colleagues, Joe Wright from Estates, is recently back at work after donating a kidney so he "could make a difference" as he sees patients arriving at our renal unit. He has learned his kidney has gone to a 22-year-old woman who has regained her life and is back at work. She has written to Joe to thank him.
We offer relatives keepsakes, for example handprints and hairlocks, and also offer them the opportunity for their loved one to have their name included on our memorials at both our hospital sites. We keep in contact with families post-donation, providing ongoing support, and they receive a letter of thanks from NHSBT.
